Hyper Vocalizing in Cats
Can be fun at first but if it continues there is generally an underlying cause

Hyper vocalizing in cats can be unique, fun at times, but it most cases in can become down right irritating.

If your cat howls all the time, especially at night, by the time that you finally admit that the cat needs help, you may need just as much help as it can very unnerving in some cases.

It is widely held that this is a condition in cats that is a behavior issue.

But in reality, it may or may not be the case. In some severe cases, it may be behavioral issues, but in the vast majority of cases it is usually something else and can be treated and corrected.

Cats can make a wide variety of sounds that can be very common to all cats or they can make sounds that are unique to their breed as well as their personality.

The sounds can in form of the very welcome soft and comforting purr and low meow, or it can come as growl or a hiss.

In other cases, the sounds are very much like a shriek, while in other instances you swear that your cat just spit at you.

BREEDS COMMONLY AFFECTED

Hyper vocalizing in cats will also depend on the breed of your cat.

What is considered hyper in some cats may just be common communication to other cats.

There is little doubt that Orientals breeds, especially Siamese, are by far and away the loudest, but the Tonkinese, Burmese and Korat breeds may not be far behind.

The more quiet breeds tend to be the Birman, Bombay, Havana Brown, Russian Blue, Scottish Fold, and the Selkirk Rex.

The breed of your cat may certainly determine how vocal they are and what type of personality they may have that may be contributing to any type of hyper vocalizing in cats.

However, perhaps the most important of all factors is why they are so vocal.

If your cat has a personality where they love to roam and explore or be around people as much as possible, and you live in a very small apartment, it may seem to your cat as if they are locked in a closet and they will vocalize their discontent.

Hyper vocalizing in cats may also be used as a way to get your attention.

However, it may also be the result of an underlying medical condition and they are simply trying to convey to you that something is wrong with them.

Interpreting and understanding this vocalization may be the key to slowing it down or ending it in some cases.

THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF HYPER VOCALIZING IN CATS

Hyper vocalizing in cats may have several different causes but it is important to fully understand the breed that you are choosing and the type of personality that they may have.

Once that has been decided and your cat still seems way too vocal or suddenly turns hyper-vocal for no apparent reason, there may be underlying reasons.

They can be broken down to two groupings: Behavior and Medical.

Behavior reasons will usually start with some type of a motivational conflict in your cat that almost always is the result of a limited access.

If your cat is used to roaming or having a lot of freedom and they are suddenly forced to some kind of confined space, they are going to let you know about it.

The only way they know how to do this is by vocalizing their displeasure.

If you have moved to a smaller home or apartment or if you just rescued a cat from a shelter, this may be the cause and you will have to learn to give them some more freedom or at least walk them.

Very closely associated with this pattern is the attention seeking cat.

If this is the case, it is almost always fueled by an owner that unwitting will show positive reactions to this behavior and it will be extremely difficult to reverse this pattern.

If hyper vocalizing in cats is compulsive and there is no underlying medical condition, you will need to be very upfront with your veterinarian as there are several drugs that can help calm your cat, regardless of the breed.

The same would apply to anxiety and fear, especially when they are left alone.

Desensitization techniques are very successful in treating separation anxiety when used in combination with counter conditioning to change your cat’s attitude.

This is usually done by helping your cat learn to adapt by controlling exposure to situations or stimuli that they see as a negative situation into a positive situation, especially in younger cats.

In middle aged or older cats, hyper vocalizing in cats may also be caused by other circumstances including medical conditions and can very easily be caused by pain that your cat is experiencing.

They are acutely aware of this pain and they are trying to tell you in the only way they know how.

The most common cause is from Hyperthyroidism, and if it is, your cat will show you other symptoms as well.

In addition to the sudden loud crying sounds they may also exhibit ravenous appetites while at the same time start to lose a lot of weight.

With this condition, along with the hyper vocalizing comes hyper activity, as it goes hand in hand.

Sudden outbursts may also be the result of a brain tumor, especially in an older cat that has not exhibited previous symptoms.

These tumors totally change their personality as well as their behavior, especially how they vocalize.

Feline hyperesthesia may also be the cause and is believed to be a condition that affects your cat’s brain and electric waves.

It generally affects middle aged cats with symptoms that cause frantic grooming and can lead to almost possession like behavior and one of the signs is extreme vocalization.

But there is also one other condition that is almost always overlooked by owners or passed off as nothing in hyper vocalizing in cats , until the extreme vocalization starts.

It is referred to as Estrus.

ESTRUS MAY ALSO BE THE UNDERLYING CAUSE

Estrus is when your cat goes into heat and it can cause several unexpected and mysterious conditions to suddenly appear such as rolling or rubbing anything they can.

But perhaps the most common sudden symptom is hyper-vocalization.

Hyper vocalizing in cats can be a very challenging experience for any owner.

It is for this reason that it is important to fully understand the breed you are choosing and their vocalization habits to start with.

Summary

But it is also important to understand that any breed can very suddenly change the way they talk to you and it can be caused by behavior as well as medical conditions.

However, it most every case it can be corrected to the point that it is no longer nerve racking.
